Ron Paul Takes Very Close Second in Ames

AMES, IOWA – August 13, 2011 – News reports, as well as Ron Paul himself, indicated that the twelve-term Texas congressman was expected to do well in today’s straw poll in Ames. Today’s second-place finish – by a razor-thin margin against local favorite Rep. Michele Bachmann – is a clear victory for Congressman Paul, who neither hails from Iowa nor espouses the foreign interventionism that continues to resonate with some Iowa Republicans.

“Any candidate has reason to celebrate a strong showing like Congressman Paul’s in Iowa,” said Thomas Woods, Revolution PAC advisory board chairman, “but given how radically different Ron Paul’s message is, he should be especially delighted to have come within a handful of votes of first place – a poll in which he placed fifth four years ago.

“Ron Paul is taking dead aim at issues no one else will even touch,” noted Woods. “No one was talking about the Federal Reserve System until someone of Ron Paul’s boldness and knowledge came along and showed us how this institution was making our economy so unstable and ripping us off in the process. No one questions the premises behind our government’s disastrous foreign policy. Ron Paul is trying to undo 100 years of brainwashing, from both official Left and official Right. The Left has its faith in Big Government at home, and the neoconservative Right an equally misplaced faith in Big Government abroad. Both have embraced fairy tales over real history.

“Ron Paul rejects it all. The same corrupt political class that has wrecked our economy is the same corrupt political class that has us mired in these trillion-dollar wars. It’s about time both sides woke up and realized they’ve been had. That’s what Ron Paul is trying to tell his countrymen. And in light of his strong showing in Ames, the message is getting through.”

According to Woods, the Congressman’s willingness to take politically unpopular positions on the very eve of the straw poll was an indication of the strength of the candidate’s convictions. “Congressman Paul said things in that debate – reminding the crowd that people tend not to like it when the CIA installs dictators and secret police in their countries, as happened in Iran in 1953 – that were not calculated to curry favor with the crowd he was wooing at Ames. But that’s who he is. He would rather tell unpopular truths than win cheap votes or applause. He’s not a blowdried phony out of central casting, like most of the candidates our system serves up to us. He is a real person with real principles, and he has stuck to them since entering public life 35 years ago. Even his bitterest opponent has to respect that.”

To be sure, in the days leading up to the straw poll, media sources were already trying to downplay the event’s significance. “This is typical of the media,” said Revolution PAC President Gary Franchi. “If it looks like one of the officially anointed candidates isn’t going to win, they grab their toys and whine all the way home. But even the media is going to have a hard time pretending it doesn’t really matter that Congressman Paul did so well in a state where his limited-government philosophy is a hard sell even to many self-described conservatives.”

What’s more, strong showings in Ames have often translated into strong showings at the important Iowa caucuses at the end of the year.

“This was a great day for the Congressman,” said Franchi. “But it’s the end of the beginning. Much hard work remains ahead of us. We can now carry out that work with the confidence that the message of freedom is resonating as none of us could have imagined.”

I do not understand how Bachmann was near last place in the debate result, and received first place in the straw poll? It is still pretty amazing though how the people are waking up, and are now realizing how the media continues to manipulate the news. MSNBC has again ignored Ron Paul! They did not give him credit for second place, and actually removed him from the results. I think that we should email MSNBC and force an apology!!!

Have you noticed how in every main stream news article on this they just briefly mention Ron Paul coming in second, usually no more than one sentence, then go on for paragraphs talking about that loser Pawlenty.

  • Bachmann bought the straw poll with Randy Travis tickets. Maybe Ron Paul should have given out free tickets to see American Idol or Dancing with the Stars.

No matter what happens when it come time for that most important day, we must vote for Ron Paul whether he is on the ballot or not. It is time to not only rock this nation, but the world. Ron Paul supporters must stick together now more than ever. We the people can still make a difference. United we stand…..vote for “the lesser of two evils” = we divide and fall. If we fail this time, there is no turning back. It’s now or never folks.

I attended the Iowa Straw Poll today and RP supporters were everywhere! It’s hard to believe he did not win this thing. And not just “young internet” supporters. The supporters were from every walk of life and loyal to the message of limited government, liberty, freedom and prosperity.
Iowa has opened the floodgates for other Americans to look at Ron Paul and stop letting the media choose our candidate. A sleeping giant has awoken and he is hungry for representation!

I’m not scared the Bachmann won, because she is not really the Tea Party leader anyway since she vote for the PATRIOT ACT. Ron Paul’s people actually started the Tea Party and we are finally getting through to the average person who sees that the money we are borrowing is costing us about 40% of what we make. We are simply maxed out, and the best person to fix it is the person who has giving back some of his Congressional allocation every year as he has always balanced his own budget. It’s painful, but necessary, so Ron Paul is necessary, and NOW!

Second place is perfect. If he would have received first place, the media would have declared that the Ames Straw Poll is irrelevant and blah blah blah. With Ron Paul receiving second, and being 152 votes away. The media has no choice but to cover it. Bachman is a media darling and they won’t discredit her getting first in the straw poll. Also, this is going to knock romney out of the front runner status. Perry got more votes than him as a write in. Perry is a warmonger and will not get any independent votes. Perry, Bachman and the rest will all attack each other and bring up skeletons from each others closets. Dr Paul doesn’t have any skeletons because he’s been saying the same thing for over 30 years and the man is right on his stances. All we have to do is keep up the good work and we can get the GOP nomination. Remember, the GOP nomination is going to be much harder than the presidency. Dr. Paul will trounce Obama in a one on one debate. I can’t wait to see that.

I think 2nd is the best to get right now. If Rp would of got 1st the media would just disregard the whole poll. Now that Bachmann is 1st, the media can’t go Bachman 1st whooho, and then discredit RP 2nd place win. Saying the poll means nothing. The media can’t have it both ways. So now there going to have to talk about Mr. Paul. RP2012 the only god person running for president.

I agree Arthur The NWO will not give up thier Power easily we are going to have to go around them thought them & over them !!!!! We have to reach out to the sleeping Giant the 50% of the American People whom have left the system & do not vote for they are what the Establishment truly FEARS we have to get them to register Republican & support & vote for Ron Paul This the only way we can overwhelm the NWO at the Ballet Box.

  • Pat Mason says:

I don’t agree with the contention that a “razor-thin” second place finish is desireable or good in any way. What it clearly shows is that Iowans – though putting the bulk of the more ‘In Your Face’ Neocons behind Ron Paul – STILL put a NEOCON in first place. Michelle Bachmann is nothing short of a political simpleton; an embarrassment with a penchant for mouthing idiocy. If all her faults were simply limited to her ‘Me Too’ agreement with our current Neocon foreign policy that would be reason enough to cast her out of respectable society. She also has no problem lifting passages and agendas right out of Ron Paul’s manifesto and claiming them as her own (Newt Gingrich also shamelessly did this lifting passages almost word for word). Her first place finish shows that Iowans STILL don’t ‘Get It!’

    • K I says:

      Pat,

That is correct and possible that Iowans still don’t get it…but a lot more people do get it now than ever before. People who only get their news from TV and get programmed and brainwashed are difficult to help…if they get some exposure to alternative media on the internet then they might also see some light. It is difficult to accept that how someone cannot see the shallowness of Bachmann and her borrowed ideas and existence and her claims to be the source of the tea party. I think the thing is that presentation and packing works better for the American public than real substance and courage. But Americans can always choose to see the fakeness of a Bachmann…

      • tajitj says:

She basically 100% endorsed dragging America into another bloody costly war vs Iran if the same people who told us Saddam had WMD, tell us they are working on a nuke.

I say Dr. Paul makes that the issue and yells at the top of his lungs that EVERY other candidate running wants another Iraq using the same bogus intelligence. That is one issue that could seperate him.

    • M.A says:

      Pat,

The fact that Bachmann, Gingrich and other establishment Republicans are now wearing Ron Paul masks(Which too many people sadly fall for) for the electoral carnival and ” lifting passages and agendas right out of Ron Paul’s manifesto and claiming them as their own” is a good sign that Ron Paul is winning on the ideological front, even if he doesn’t end up winning politically. Remember, imitation is the highest form of flattery.
